Introduction

Context

Petit VR is a collaboration between i3 Simulations and the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Center (RI-MUHC). The project aims to provide innovative training for pediatric trauma care using immersive VR simulation.

Challenge

For any complex VR application, especially in high-stakes fields like medicine, the design for onboarding and tutorials is critical. It must not only teach the medical content but also train the user in basic VR locomotion, interaction, and tool manipulation.

Goal

Design a multi-modal, staged learning approach, integrating dedicated tutorials (scenarios) and instructional videos into the training solution

Background

Users

Primary: Clinicians undergoing CME, medical students

Secondary: Clinical educators/Instructors

Insights from previous products

Onboarding process for previous VR products included videos, documents and scenarios with explanatory audio. The need to create dedicated tutorial scenarios was identified across user trials, as VR onboarding involved instructions that utilized multiple references such as position of controller buttons, objects inside virtual environment, gestures etc. While uncontrolled user trials and scaling product adoption required onboarding for solo and remote multiplayer users, tutorials had to be redesigned for students and instructors of various levels of exposure to VR.

Play testing

Audio Instructions alone failed to communicate the interaction behavior

Actions can be performed quicker when exploratory modality is utilised

Real footage, such as using controllers, could not clearly show buttons

Development

Ideation

Tutorial scenarios were ideated to provide lessons for basic controls and simulation actions. Each lesson was further broken down into individual interactions.

Steps for introducing controls/actions

While designing steps, users of varying levels of skill were considered and hence elements of exploration and challenge were introduced. Each step is introduced with VO, subtitles and instructional videos. The user can test the introduced controls and receive feedback, positive reinforcements in sound and haptic format.

Chapter 2 - Rotation

The joystick on the left controller will rotate your perspective. Push the joystick to left or right directions

Sound effect

Alright, try rotating towards the left

Good job!

How about towards the right?

You are a natural!

Instructional Videos

Instructional videos where created to be displayed inside the tutorial scenario support each step of the lessons.

UI for tutorial scenario

Spatial UI was developed to support the specific requirements of hosting multiplayer tutorial scenarios

Impact

93%

Of clinicians stated they would

adopt the platform in their hospital.

87%

Of clinicians found the simulation

to be highly useful for their training.

While testing with 11 physicians from 8 countries, Petit VR showcased high level of acceptance with a majority of users without VR experience

Technology Acceptance : Ease of Use: 4 (Median) and overall positive experience 5 (Median) in 5 point Likert scale

Feedback incorporated: Device setup instructions like IPD adjustment and wearing prescription glasses were added to the onboarding video reducing issues related to cyber sickness
